About the Payson Community and Available Facilities:
Medical Facilities:
Payson Regional Medical Center offers an emergency room and trauma center,
radiology and lab facilities, operating suites, outpatient rooms, and a recovery unit.
Other medical resources include three nursing homes and more than 40 medical professionals
including physicians, osteopaths, orthodontists, dentists, dermatologists,
optometrists, opticians, opthalmologists, and chiropractors.
Educational Facilities:
Payson has 3 elementary schools, 1 middle school, 1 high school, and a Community
College (Gila Community College) which offers undergraduate courses and programs.
Northern Arizona University, in partnership with the College, also offers programs in Payson.
Government:
Payson has a Mayor, six Council members, and a town Manager. The town has a
full service Police Department, and a full service Fire Department with 2 stations.
The Gila County Sheriff and Department of Public Safety also maintain offices in Payson.
Economy:
The local economy is dominated by the tourism and retirement industries, with
a growing emphasis on manufacturing and service firms. Also being encouraged is
light industry that is compatible with the community's "High Quality of Life".
Arizonans and visitors alike migrate to cool Payson in the summer. Drawn not only
by Payson's cooler summer climate but also by it many summer festivals including
the "World's Oldest Continuous Rodeo" and State Championship Fiddlers Contest.
In the winter, the community attracts many visitors who want to enjoy its scenery,
mild climate and rural atmosphere.
Among the area's major employers are the Payson Unified School District, the Mazatzal Casino, the Payson Regional Medical Center, the Town of Payson, Wal-Mart Super-Center and two major grocery store chains. Also supplying jobs to Payson residents are many medical clinics, motels, restaurants, and other businesses including The Payson Roundup, a bi-weekly newspaper, that keeps Paysonites informed of area news, events, and happenings. Recently, several manufacturing operations have located in Payson, including Precision Intricast (a precision orthotics device manufacturer), Pulau Electronics, Custom Aircraft (airplane assembly/repair firm), and Daryl's Precision (precision machine work). Other employers include Gollipops (lollipop producer) and the Payson Candle Factory.
Property Taxes:
Property Tax in Arizona is based on assessed valuation, 10% of market value for residential
property. Average tax rate on homes in Arizona before exemptions and rebates is
1.3% of market value. Payson property tax rate for $100 assessed value was $12.93
in 1997 (last figures available).
Airport:
Payson Municipal Airport (CTAF 122.8) supports some 30,000 operations per year
on its lighted 5,500 foot runway; and offers FBO, fueling, maintenance facilities,
hangars, tie-downs, flight instruction, scenic flights, charter service, and a
restaurant. The latest addition is a "fly-in" campground adjacent to the runway.
