In Winter sledding or just playing in the snow are popular. Payson usually receives several snows a winter, and while they look beautiful and are fun to play in, they usually melt before they become a nuisance. Payson's proximity to the Phoenix area make it a favorite to "come see snow".
There is a "play area" north of Strawberry on Hwy 87 which has just recently been reopened, and as this area usually gets more snow than Payson proper, it is a fun place to go after a snowfall.
In Payson itself Green Valley Park offers a bowl-like area with gentle slopes which is a favorite of the local kids when the snow's on.

Camping is a very popular summer time activity in the Tonto National Forest (the national forest which surrounds the Payson area).

This link (click here) will take you to a chart of camping sites.

Hiking, picnicing, playing in the creeks, or just leaning your back against a tall tree and watching the clouds go by are all popular pass times. But for those of you who think life is for fishing...
There are many lakes on the Rim. These are the ones for which we have reports:
Woods Canyon- Fishing is reported good.
Chevelon Canyon- Trout fishing fair to good.
Black Canyon- Access road is open and ice is off surface. Shore fishing is reported fair to good,
Willow Springs- Gate is closed, There is a 1/4 mile walk to lake. Ice is off surface, fishing reported slow.

This is a link to the Tonto National Forest home page, which will give much more information on all types of recreation.
